Mayan’s first experience with competing was in the New Zealand Bouldering Series in 2002, which to her surprise she won, and continued to win, for the next four years. Then in 2006, Mayan went to Europe to compete in the world cup circuit. "This was a valuable experience, testing me how to deal with mental pressure, to focus solely on climbing. However, competing at this level made me realize that my true passion was for climbing on rock, seeking my own challenges and inspiring lines.”
